Whether you’re a copywriter or a business owner wondering if you can write website copy using AI, the question remains: Will AI replace copywriters?

Short answer: no. 

AI tools are too limited 

AI tools are not personalized enough to replace the custom copy that a copywriter would create for you. So, what is it that a copywriter does that AI tools can’t? And if you’re writing your website copy, how can you do a similar process to ensure that it converts? Let’s get into some things that AI tools can’t do that copywriters can.

AI doesn’t know the specifics of your brand 

If you give an AI tool a 1-sentence prompt to write a 5-paragraph article, it won’t know the specific characteristics that make your business unique, so it won’t emphasize those characteristics throughout the copy, even though that’s crucial. 

AI can’t do everything all at once 

The prompts that you feed an AI tool are limited, and unlike copywriters, AI tools can’t factor in your SEO keywords, brand tone, and unique selling point all at once. At best, they’ll be able to keep 1 or 2 factors in mind and you’ll have to do the rest manually. 

AI tools can’t do market research 

In-depth market research is the most time-consuming part of copywriting for my clients. Without market research, AI tools can’t position you as the go-to person in your marketplace. The AI tools only have access to what you give them, not the entire Internet, your top competitors, and their Yelp reviews. This is where a copywriter comes in – they do a deep dive, or at least I do, on the entire market. These insights inform the entire copywriting process. 

AI tools can’t interview your past clients 

I was joking, THIS is the most time-consuming part of my copywriting jobs. Interviewing my clients’ past clients is the step that gives me the most insight into their clients’ state of mind, hesitations, and desires. AI, on the other hand, doesn’t have access to this human element. 

AI tools don’t have unique methodologies 

My copywriting methodology is based on the psychology of sales and I utilize it in various ways depending on the type of copy I’m creating and the client I’m serving. AI, however, does exactly what you tell it and cannot provide a customized service or proven methodology. Nobody understands how to write words that sell better than a human who understands the people you’re selling to.
