Whether you wrote your own website or have had the same exact copy for years, you may be wondering: Should I hire a copywriter?
Obviously, I’m biased, because I think hiring a copywriter is almost always a smart choice & a well-written website will continue to pay itself off for years to come. However, many clients come to me with different scenarios wondering if it’s the right time for them to invest in a copywriter. Often, services that aren’t full, done-for-you copywriting services can still help them increase their website conversions.
So, let’s go over the scenarios you may be in and whether or not hiring a copywriter is the right choice. If not, we’ll discuss other ways you can still increase your conversions.
Scenario #1: You DIY’ed your website copy
You may have written your website copy and have yet to get a second set of eyes on it. Getting feedback from others is crucial – you’ve been staring at the words you’ve written for so long that you probably don’t feel like you have an objective POV!
In this case, I’d recommend having someone audit your website. I offer free and paid website audits where I’ll tell you which small changes you can make to see big improvements, from copy to user experience to design. If you’re not interested in having a professional look over your site just yet, I’d show it to some family or friends (bonus points if it’s someone in your target audience) to see what connects with them & what’s not clicking. Ask them questions like:
- Which calls to action would motivate you to take action?
- Which parts of the website copy are you connecting and relating to?
- What questions do you have about my services after going through the site?
- How do I compare to the similar services that you’re aware of?
Scenario #2: You’re creating a website from scratch
In this case, I’d suggest investing in full, done-for-you services from the start – at least a designer and copywriter. If you don’t invest in these services or some version of them, you may launch a business based on guesswork that’s lacking confidence and, in turn, conversions. Months will pass and you’ll wish you had just invested in the services from the start (I’ve been there!).
Scenario #3: Your business is moving in a new direction
You may already have a website but need to adjust things because your business is moving in a different direction. You may be adjusting your target audience, your services, or moving from freelancing to running an LLC. Whatever the case, I’d suggest either investing in done-for-you services (which is likely something you’ve done at this point when your business website first launched) or at least getting a second set of professional eyes on your site. This might mean having a designer tweak your branding materials or having a copywriter audit your site to ensure that it converts when you launch the new version.
Scenario #4: You know your website needs improvement
You have a website but know that it can be improved because you’re not seeing the conversions you know you can get. In this case, I’d suggest getting an audit. There’s no need to hire someone to create something from scratch if you already have your site set up and don’t hate it! Having a second set of eyes will simply let you know which small changes you can make to your site to increase your website conversions.
